Chen Chen


Dr. Chen Chen is a Distinguished Professor and Director of Artificial Organ Technology Lab, School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Soochow University. He has nearly 30 years of experience in research in biomedical engineering and eletro-mechanical engineering, particular with ventricular assist devices, magnetic bearings and special magnetic devices, biofluid mechanics, and heart valve prostheses. His primary work in the last 20 years has been associated with blood pumps with fully magnetically suspended impeller to substantially improve hemocompatibility. He made critical contributions to the development of the once world leading technology of the fully magnetically suspended ventricular assist device named Levacor of World Heart Inc. in the US. He furthered his research by committing to the development of another proprietary ventricular assist device with full magnetic suspension, the CH-VAD, at CH Biomedical, Inc. that he founded in China in 2008. His efforts led to a number of technological breakthroughs for magnetic suspension, fluid dynamics, and multidisciplinary design optimization involved in CH-VAD. The success of CH-VAD design has been regarded by peers as a landmark for feasibility of ultra-compactness in fully magnetically suspended blood pumps. These accomplishments have brought Dr. Chen world reputation as an expert in magnetic suspension in blood pumps. 

Dr. Chen's previous experience involves serving as a professor, engineer, and post-doctoral fellow in industry and academic institutions in China, US, and Japan. He received his Ph.D. from Chengdu University of Science and Technology (currently Sichuan University), and his B.S. from Tsinghua University, China.
