Research Experience:

Prof. Zhifang Chai is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Now he serves as Dean of the School of Radiation Medicine and Protection and the School for Radiological and Interdisciplinary Science. He received his Bachelor's degree from Fudan University in 1964, majoring in radiation chemistry. From 1980-1982, he was funded by the Humboldt Scholarship and studied nuclear technology and application research at the University of Cologne in Germany. Since then, he has worked at Purdue University in the United States, the University of Strasbourg in France, the Delft University in the Netherlands, the ECN energy research center, and the University of Tokyo in Japan for a short period. He has devoted himself to the development of nuclear technology and nuclear analysis methodology and applied them to some interdisciplinary subjects for a long time. Thus, he has made impactful achievements in many fields, including molecule-neutron activation analysis of several important elements, thoroughly characterizing the family of platinum group elements, metallomics, environmental toxicology and nano security, and collecting the fast neutron spectrum in a nuclear explosion field. Professor Chai is now engaged in the research of radioactive medicine, nuclear energy chemistry and the nano-biological effect, and has been responsible for various major research programs, as well as major and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation. He has published more than 500 papers in high-impact journals, most notably Nature and its series, Chem. Soc. Rev, PNAS, JACs, Nano Lett, etc., eight Chinese books, five English books, and given more than 50 seminars or keynote reports at international conferences. He has served or currently serves as a titular member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and as a member or consultant of five international academic organization committees, an editorial board member of four international and ten Chinese publications, including Radiochimica Acta, Metallomics and Science China, etc. Professor Chai has won nine National and Ministerial Awards, including the National Science Award, the second prize of National Natural Science Award, the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of Chinese Academy of Sciences Natural Science Award, etc. In 2005, he won the George Von Hevesy Award, which is the highest award in the field of international radio-analytical chemistry and nuclear chemistry, and was the first award winner coming from a developing country. In 2014, he was the Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher in the Field of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Now, he is responsible for a major research project of the National Natural Science Foundation, 'Fuel Proliferation and Transmutation of Advanced Nuclear Fission'. Last, but not least, he is responsible for the Radiation Medicine Collaborative Innovation Center and Advantage Discipline of Special Medicine in Jiangsu province.
