School of Foreign Languages

English language teaching at Soochow University began along with the founding of the university in 1900. The department of English was set up in 1940. This single-program department later expanded to become the Department of Foreign languages in the 1950s and the School of Foreign languages in the 1990s. The school has been established as one of the most prestigious institutions in foreign language teaching and research in China.

Located on the main campus of Soochow University, the School of Foreign Languages has about 1200 full-time on-campus undergraduate students in seven language programs (i.e. English, Russian, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Korean). Over 330 full-time graduate(both master's and Ph.D)students are advancing their studies here in modern languages and linguistics, world literature and literary criticism, translation and interpreting, semiotics, cross-cultural communication, language education, theatre and films, etc.

The school is, as always, committed to teaching and academic excellence, community service, and global outreach.
