Kenneth Wang School of Law

Kenneth Wang School of Law of Soochow University is located in the ancient city of Suzhou - "the Paradise of the Earth". Its predecessor is Soochow University Law School whose name was very famous both at home and abroad. In September of 1915, authorized by the parent University, Soochow University Law School was founded in Shanghai by Charles Rankin, an American lawyer who was a teacher of political science at the University as well as the principal of the university's second middle school, with the idea of cultivating legal talents for China. The law school then focused on comparative law, so it was also known as the "Comparative Law School of China". Its special emphasis on Common Law made it part of the famous Chinese saying, "Dongwu in the south, Chaoyang in the north" which refers to then China's two famous law schools. It was even once lauded as "the best and most famous law school in south China". Among many modern legal luminaries, such as Wang Chonghui, Dong Kang, Wu Jingxiong, Sheng Zhenwei, Qiu Hanping, Sun Xiaolou, Wang Boqi, Yang Zhaolong, Li Haopei, Ni Zhengyu and Pan Handian, they were either diligent teachers or well-known graduates of Dongwu. Elite talents flooded into Dongwu and each had profound knowledge and outstanding abilities, thus created a glory for a time. During the PRC's 1952 reorganization of higher education, Soochow University was renamed as "Jiangsu Normal College", and the law school was closed in Suzhou but incorporated into East China University of Political Science and Law. In 1982, approved by the State Council, "Jiangsu Normal College" was renamed as "Soochow University". Afterwards, Legal education was restored and the department of law was reestablished, which was enlarged in to law school in 1986. In 2000, Kenneth Wang, a 1938 graduate of Soochow University Law School generously donated a huge sum of money for the construction of law school. Later Soochow University Law School was renamed to Kenneth Wang School of Law.

Just like the university motto says, "Unto A Full Grown Man", we are keenly aware that, compared to the achievements of Soochow University Law School in the past, what we have done is not worth mentioning. Currently, when thinking of the spirit of Soochow University Law School's history, our faculty feel pressed to keep on improving our academic pursuit and carry on the predecessors' wishes. Maybe what we can comfort the Dongwu alumni and our colleagues are: we have been working hard and now we will keepworking hard.
