About Suzhou

Suzhou is a renowned cultural, historic and tourist city. Situated at the mouth of the Yangtze River about 100 kilometers west of Shanghai, Suzhou covers an area of 5,838 square kilometers with a population of 6.67 million. Reputed as the "Venice of the Orient", the old part of Suzhou city lies in the network of rivers. Parallel with the river run the streets and near the river stand many buildings. This scenery of 'streets in front, rivers behind' forms the unique pattern of 'small bridges, flowing water and folk dwellings'.

Suzhou's history dates back more than 2,500 years. The long history of the city has left behind many attractive scenic spots and historical sites with beautiful and delightful legends. The elegant and classical gardens, old fashioned houses, and delicate bridges hanging over flowing waters in the drizzling rain, the beautiful lakes with undulating hills in lush greenery, the numerous scenic spots and historical sites, and the exquisite arts and crafts, have made Suzhou a world famous historical and cultural city full of eternal and poetic charm.

Suzhou gardens are famous all over the world. These gardens, integrating buildings, mountains, rivers, flowers and trees, sculptures, calligraphy and painting into one setting, are the treasure of human civilization. The Garden of the Master-of-the-Net (part of which has been reproduced in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, U.S.A.), the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden are some fine examples. The city is also notable for its silk production, silk embroidery and other handicrafts such as sandalwood fans. Suzhou is home to various schools of literature, painting and music.

Today's Suzhou is on the track of development and prosperity. Taking a panoramic view of Suzhou New District, skyscrapers and modern residential areas are visible everywhere. Suzhou has become the second largest industrial city and a top city for IT industry nationwide. It boasts a number of emerging pillar industries covering electronic information, bio-medicine, fine chemistry, new material, new energy, etc. and as many as 13 national special industrial bases.
