The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University



The First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University has its origin in Suzhou Boxi Hospital, which was founded by the American Methodist Episcopal Church in 1883 (the 9th year during the Guangxu Reign of the Qing Dynasty). In 1994, it became one of the first "Grade III, Level A" general hospitals in Jiangsu Province approved by the Ministry of Health. In recent years, it has won a series of honors and awards, such as civilization unit of Jiangsu Province in 2016, Advanced Collective of National Hospital Culture Construction in 2016, Innovation Award of Hospital Reform in 2012, etc. In the list of China's Best Hospitals issued by Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, the hospital ranked 47th as one of the three hospitals which entered the top-50 in Jiangsu, and it ranked first in the list of Top 100 Hospitals in China's Prefecture-level Cities for three consecutive years.

The hospital is made up of the Main District  and Shizijie District, facilitated with approximately 3000 sickbeds together. At present the hospital has 4435 employees, including 279 senior professionals and 551 junior professionals.

The hospital is equipped with 37 clinical departments, 8 medical technology departments, 21 clinical medical teaching and research divisions, 10 National, Provincial and Ministerial level training and demonstration bases, and 15 laboratories. It now has 2 national key disciplines, 8 national key clinical specialties, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health; 3 clinical medical centers of the "Health Promotion Project" of Jiangsu Province, etc.

Being the teaching hospital of the Soochow University, it has 1 post-doctoral program, 20 doctoral programs, and 21 master programs, with clinical medicine being a top grade discipline, and is responsible for the teaching task of graduate, undergraduate and overseas students in the First Clinical Medical School and Nursing School of Soochow University. As a reservoir of talents, it takes pride in having 82 doctoral tutors, 133 master tutors; 1 member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 chairman in the Chinese Medical Association, 1 member of National Thousand Overseas Talents Program, etc. In 2016 and 2017, the hospital enjoyed the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award.

Over the years, the introduction of new knowledge, technology, facility and technical personnel promotes the modernization and development of the hospital. Since 1978, it has conducted various academic exchanges and established friendly partnerships with over 30 universities and medical institutions in the United States, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macao, etc. More than 100 foreign specialists were invited to the hospital to deliver lectures and to provide operation guidance, and over 30 well-known overseas scholars and alumni were awarded part-time professorship and visiting professorship. Many batches of faculty were sent abroad on education, research, visits and academic exchanges, enhancing the hospital's international publicity.

For further expansion and development, with the joint efforts of the hospital staff, the General Hospital, situated in Pingjiang District, was officially opened on August 28, 2015, including outpatient, inpatient and emergency department. At the same time, Shizijie Campus still retains all the medical service for the general public, developing in the "two campuses running for the same goal" pattern, which will be prepared to assume the responsibility for medical escort.
