Research Center of Mental Health Education of University Students in Southern Jiangsu

  Research Center of Mental Health Education of University Students in Southern Jiangsu (the Center, for short)is the former Soochow Psychological Consultation Center, set up in May, 1988 and one of the earliest set up inside Chinese universities. The Center was officially set up in May, 2006 in accordance with the 1st social administrative documentation issued by Education Bureau of Jiangsu Province and is affiliated with the School of Education. In January, 2007 the Center was elected Advanced Unit on College Students’ Mental Health Consultation by China Association for Mental Health’s Special Committee of College Students and Excellent Group on College Students’ Mental Health Consultation by Jiangsu Association for Mental Health.

Orientation of the Center:

  Based on Soochow University, trying to influence the Southern of Jiangsu Province and serve the whole society,  and then developing into one of the A-level education and research center for college students’ mental health that is qualified to communicate with foreign peers.

Duties of the Center:

  To provide an overall mental health consultation for college students. First, to spread and popularize mental health knowledge and help college students realize the importance of mental health to their growth; second, to introduce methods and ways to mental health and help college students foster better psychological quality; third, to analysis students’ mental problems and help them treat their problems scientifically; fourth, to teach students methods of psychological adjustments and help them resolve mental difficulties, treasure their life, care about their collective interest, be kind to others and live a happy life. Furthermore, the Center puts great importance to scientific researches to provide theoretical support for and  warrant police making of college students’ mental health education. 

  Leading System and Working System: Leaders who are in charge of student management in 27 universities and colleges in Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou formed the Council for College Students’ Mental Health Education to provide consultation and guidance on the college students’ mental health education. Soochow University itself also set up the Leading Group for Mental Health Education and Research. Its leader is Jiang Yong,Vice President and Vice CPC Secretary and other members are all the key leaders of Students’ Affair Division, Committee of Communist Youth League and School of Education. The Director of the Center is Yuan Xuefeng, CPC Secretary of School of Education. As  a solid mechanism ，the Center has such sub-offices as Consultation and Service Division(C & S Division), Training Division and Research Division.

  Consultants in the Center consist of well qualified and professional psychological teachers and graduate students. They offer psychological consultation in the Consultation Room and Group Counseling Room on all the four campuses. Currently the target clients are students and the treatment methods include individual mental consultation, group counseling, family therapy, psychodrama theraoy and mental health education. The Center aims at help students solve their difficulties in and anxieties or confusions over acclimation, self-cognition, communication, study development, emotional troubles, job-seeking, sex and so on.
