The Kenneth Wang School of Law is the first institution for legal education in Jiangsu Province. It was originally founded in 1900 and known as ¡°Soowchow University¡± .In 1952, during the natioanl reform of higher education, Soochow University was renamed as ¡°Jiangsu Teachers¡¯College¡± and the Soochow University Law School was incorporated into another universities. In 1982, with the approval of the State Council, ¡°Jiangsu Teachers¡¯ College¡± was renamed as ¡°Suzhou University¡± and restored the legal education and established the Dapartment of Law, becoming one of the earliest law departments at that time in China. In 1986, the Department of Law was expanded into Law School after the approval of Jiangsu Provincial Government. In May 2000, Professor Kenneth Wang, a former student of Soochow University Law School returned to Suzhou University participating in centennial activities, walking on Alma mater¡¯s campus, too sentimentally attached to part from the centennial beautiful scenery. Deeply moved by this, Charles B. Wang, the son of Kenneth Wang generously donated to build law school building and established scholarship to promote law school¡¯s legal education and research. Suzhou University Law School was renamed as Kenneth Wang School of Law that same year and became the first public law school which funded by oveaseas special foundation in China.
The law school now has 57 full-time teachers, including 17 professors, 23 associate professors and 16 lecturers.They are well-educated and formed a well gradient and reasonable structure among old, middle-aged and young teachers with strong development potential. The teachers love their teaching and have good teaching effect, pay close attention to the frontiers development of law and diligently study and foster a good atmosphere of using research to facilitate teaching. The law school now has one undergraduate law program and law major (intellectual property), one doctoral program of constitutional law and administrative law. In June 2009, the law school was successfully approved as post-doctoral research station and has master program conferring quafication of primary disciplines and under which with 9 master programs such as Jurisprudence, Legal History, Constitutional Law and Administrative Law,Criminal Law, Civil and Business Law,Procedure Law, Economic Law, Environmental and Resources Protection Law, International Law and approved as training unviersity for Juris Master program by State Council¡¯s Academic Degree Office. Currently the law school has one research institute directly under the charge of Suzhou University¡ªSoochow Research Institute of Public Law and Comparative Law and has over 10 research institutes or centers under the charge of law school including Research Institute of Comparative Law, Anglo-American Research Center and Human Rights Studies Center . In December 2009, the law school was approved as ¡°Intellectual Property Talents Traing Base for Jiangsu Province¡±. Constitutional and Administrative Law program is a key program in Jiangsu Province. In 2003, the law undergraduate program was awarded as the Brand Major in higher institutions in Jiangsu Province; in 2004, the course of ¡®Jurisprudence¡¯ was awarded as provincial secondary level excellent course; the course of ¡®Legal Philosophy¡¯was set up as provincial excellent curriculum group. In 2006, the course of¡¯Jurisprudence¡¯was awarded as provincial first level top-quality curriculum and in 2008, it was awarded as national top-quality curriculum. In 2002, Jurisprudence and International Law was awarded as the key programs of Suzhou Universtiy.
Since 1982, the law school has developed about 9000 legal professionals at various levels and has become the important cultivating base for legal professionals in Jiangsu Province. Many alumni have become the mainstay of the state procuratorial, judicial and public security organs or organizations and the nucleus of legal education.
