School of Social Science, Soochow University is one of the second-level school affiliated by Soochow University, the predecessor of which can be traced back to the time of Soochow University. Jiangsu Teachers University established the subject of History in 1953, the famous historian Doctor Cai Degeng was appointed to set up History Department in 1955, and then such History department wash changed as School of Society in 1995.

  Currently School of Social Science has set up five departments and eight undergraduate majors, including Department of History, Department of Achieves and E-government (including Achieves Science, Library Science, Information Resource Management), Department of Sociology and Social Work (including Sociology, Social Work), Department of Tourism Management and Department of Labor and Social Security. And the number of faculty reaches 89, therein, there are 76 full-time teachers, 21 professors, 17 vice-professors, 8 supervisors of doctor students and 36 supervisors of master student. During the recent five years, the teachers in School of Social Science, Soochow University have published near 40 monographs and teaching materials and over 500 papers, and they have taken over 80 science and research projects in national level, provincial level and municipal level and have been awarded over 40 various awards. Certain scientific research institutions in provincial level and university level are affiliated by School of Society, Soochow University, including the Key Research Base of Humanity and Society Science in Jiangsu Province “Research Base of WU Culture”, the International Research Center of WU Culture in Soochow University etc.

 School of Social Science, Soochow University has established 1 doctor program, 1 mobile postdoctoral station, 1 master program of class one discipline, 13 master programs of class two discipline, and 2 master’s degree programs of major. The discipline Modern Chinese History is the key discipline of Jiangsu Province, the major History Science is the famous major brand of Jiangsu Province, and the major Achieves Science if the special major in national level. Currently there are over 270 master students, over 940 undergraduates and over 1,000 students accepting adult education in the School.

  The school has established Experimental Teaching Center under which there are several professional labs and cultural relics rooms with the total size over 2,000M2, including Information Management, Achieves Protection and Duplicate Technology, Office Automation, Library and Achieves Management, Sociology and Social Work, Tourism Management and Labor and Social Security etc.

  The data room of the school with the GFA near 300M2 holds over 42,000 professional libraries and over 420 foreign and Chinese magazines; and the school edits and publishes a bimonthly named as History Teaching in Middle School (issued for restricted circulation in the school).
