The Fifth College Students' Movie Festival Started at Soochow

On the evening of April 15th, the opening ceremony was held at Dushu Lake Theatre for the Fifth Soochow University College Students' Movie Festival – the 22nd Beijing College Students' Movie Festival Soochow University Parallel Session.

A movie called Winter was shown as the beginning of the opening ceremony. The movie portrays an old man living along in the snow mountains and his story with fish, birds, and a child. The movie is unique in that it is narrated by the movements and inspirations of the actor and there is no conversation at all. Moreover, Winter is the first Chinese black-and-white movie since the appearance of colour films. The excellent visual effects of the movie won itself a position of display at the 67th Cannes International Film Festival. All the audience were silent when watching the movie as if they could feel the white snow and strong wind in Changbai Mountains.

Afterwards, Professor Ni Xiangbao, Mr. Xing Jian, Director of the movie, as well as Liu Jinkai, the Screenwriter and Huang Songbo, the young actor shared with the audience the stories behind the movie. When recalling the shooting of the movie, Director Xing said the producers risked their lives for the movie because it was very dangerous in the mountains. Director Xing also clarified that they made it such a silent and black-white-movie not for any special purposes, but for the best effects of the theme and content. Profess Ni agreed with Director Xing and he said that it was a movie that requires close "watching". Liu Jinkai and Huang Songbo also interacted with the audience.

The audience enjoyed the movie very much and some of them made some inspiring comments. For example, a student from the College of Medicine summarized the theme of the movie as "loneliness and engagement" while Mr. Sun from Phoenix Communication College analysed the artistry of the movie from perspectives of "micro"and"macro" target audience, which were both highly valued by the Director Xing and Professor Ni.

The movie festival is held from April to June every year and it adheres to the principle that values "youth passion, academic significance, and cultural sense". College students are the hosts, audience, and commentators of the festival. Therefore, it has served as an important platform for the sharing of original movies produced by students. This year's festival includes five units, namely an original movie contest, a mini movie play-writing contest, a shooting contest, a recitation contest, and a mini-video making contest.
