Abstract:

Flow battery due to its good safety, long life time, good scalability and flexibility, is believed as one promising system for large scale energy storage. Because the volumetric electron transfer number of solid active materials is much higher than that of soluble species in electrolytes, so the energy density is boosted much if solid active materials can be introduced in flow batteries. Redox targeting based Li-X flow batteries utilize redox reactions to realize energy storage in solid materials. Two main systems are developed based on redox targeting reactions: redox flow Li-ion battery and redox flow Li-O2 battery. In this talk, the working principle, the advantages, and the challenges of redox targeting based Li-X flow batteries will be carefully introduced. Through electrochemical spectroscopy, operando characterization techniques, we developed one way to estimate the efficiency of redox targeting reactions between redox molecules and target active materials. Based on our previous studies, the future development of redox targeting based Li-X flow batteries will be discussed.
