讲座内容简介:

This presentation discusses the relationship of Dewey and Confucius in regards the role of the individual and community. The first part of the presentation will discuss Dewey’s own characterization of Confucius and Confucian thought during his visit to China (1919-1921) and immediately afterwards. The second part of the presentation will discuss emerging scholarship on the parallels between Confucius’s thought and Dewey’s, especially by Dewey scholars and educationists such as Roger Ames, Sor-hoon Tan, Hunter McEwan, and Joseph Grange. A discussion of the historical figure of Confucius and the history of Confucianism in China will also be undertaken.

 

Dr. James S. Johnston教授简介:

Dr. James Scott Johnston is Jointly Appointed Associate Professor, Faculty of Education and Dept. of Philosophy, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. He has published recently in journals such as the International Journal of Philosophy/Con-Textos Kantianos, Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society, Educational Theory, Educational Studies, Studies in Philosophy and Education, and the Journal of Philosophy of Education. Dr Johnston has single-authored six published books: Inquiry and Education: John Dewey and the Quest for Democracy (2006); Regaining Consciousness: Self-Consciousness and Self-Cultivation from 1781-Present (2008); Deweyan Inquiry: from Educational Theory to Practice (2009); Kant’s Philosophy: A Study for Educators (2013); John Dewey’s Earlier Logical Theory (2014); and Problems in the Philosophy of Education (2019). He has co-authored Democracy and the Intersection of Religion and Tradition: the Reading of John Dewey’s Understanding of Democracy and Education (with R. Bruno-Jofre, G. Jover Olmeda, and D. Troehler) (2010) and edited Teacher Education in a Transnational World (with R. Bruno-Jofre (2014)). He is Associate Editor of the journal, Dewey Studies.
