Professor Guan Jinping Selected as the President of ISO/Technical Committee 38/Subcommittee 1/

Recently, Professor Guan Jinping of the College of Textile and Clothing Engineering was appointed as the president of ISO/TC38/SC1 by the Central Secretariatof the International Organization for Standardization. Recommended by the Standardization Institute of Textile Industry, a Chinese technical counterpart, the president of ISO/TC38/SC1 was elected for a term of three years by member states like China, America, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, and India after passing the interviews set by Standardization Administration of the PRC.

 

Established in 1946, the International Organization for Standardization (abbreviated as ISO), as a non-governmental international organization, stands as the most influential standardization organization in the world. As for the objective of the organization, it is defined as “promoting standardization and related activities in the world, so as to benefit the international exchange of products and services, and facilitate the cooperation in intelligence, science, technology and economy”.

 

Established in 1983, Subcommittee 1 (Tests for Colored Textiles and Colorants), as the largest subcommittee under ISO Technical Committee 38 Textile is constituted by 24 official member states and 17 observer states. Currently, the subcommittee has developed and revised over 100 testing standards, including those on textile color fastness tests and colorants tests. Given it is the first time when a Chinese professor becomes the president of SC1 ever since its establishments, the very fact has provedthe organization’s recognition of the textile and dyeing industry in China as well as the academic and research achievements of Soochow University in the field. Furthermore, Guan’s presidency in the organization would also benefit the cooperation between Soochow University and the enterprises in the textile industry, amplify our voices and deepen our understandings of the frontiers in the field, and promote the quality of the industry and the textile trade between China and foreign countries.
