Green Channel supports poor students

As in previous years, Soochow University continues to provide the “Green Channel” for those from poor families. This is available for impoverished students with loans or students subsidized by Jiangsu Education Foundation’s project so that their enrollment was insured.

It is worth mentioning that in order to help those needy students, leaders of Soochow University traveled to different regions to introduce the financial aid policies for freshmen during the summer vacation. By 8:00pm of the 9th, September, 613 students were enrolled through the Green Channel, including 131 from extremely poor backgrounds.

Hand-drawn maps guide the way for the disabled student

Kindness and warm-hearts can be felt every year on the enrollment day. This year, Wang Shiyang, a student with disabilities from Jiangyin city, Jiangsu province, is admitted by Kenneth Wang School of Law, Soochow University. He has suffered generalized paralysis from an early age and is not able to stand or hold his hands up. Though not able to write efficienty due to the hand disease, he achieved remarkable marks in Gao Kao--- 40 scores higher than the admission line of key universities in Jiangsu province.

On the day of enrollment, Wang Shiyang and his family members arrived in the East Campus early with excitement. Soochow's volunteer students explained to Wang Shiyang about some materials, including school calendar, freshman learning guide, and especially an A4 size hand-drawn map because in this map, all the barrier free access facilities in every building in Main Campus from dormitory to library are marked with coloured pens. In the hand-drawn plan of Kenneth Wang School of Law, even every turn of steps is highlighted clearly.

During the 8th and 9th, September, the university leaders visited some freshmen in East Campus, Yangcheng Lake Campus, Dushuhu Lake Campus. The deans of schools and student advisors also visited new students’ dormitories and answered questions for them and their parents.

The first “date” with Soochow University

After scanning a QR Code set for the enrollment, Wang Taotao, a freshman of physics, found that her student information such as student number was immediately displayed on her mobile phone. With this digital enrollment assisstance, she went directly to the dormitory hall and got her key, then finished registration quickly, which amazed her unexpectedly.

Such "fashion" is also available in Yangcheng Lake Campus. Ttwo attractive robots named Ji Ji and Dian Dian acted by two students at the enrollment desk of School of Mechanical and Electric Engineering. A locomotive-shaped model was made by School of Rail Transportation, with which many students took pictures.

Han Jing, a new student of School of Architecture pasted her photo with her parents on an exhibition board which was called “Yu Jian” which stands for “meeting the architecture”. Very quickly, many pictures were attached on to the board and formed the shape of a heart.

In School of Music, the new comers stuck their photos as notes on a staff. The idea was that they would use their own notes to play their musical life in Soochow University. Freshmen from School of Communication held the microphone and expressed their excitement. All these welcoming ways reflect the characteristics of different schools.
