Soochow University has played a pioneering role in the history of modern higher education in China. It was the first one to follow the western educational system, to offer master’s programs and master’s degrees, to start programs in law, and to publish a university newspaper.
During the National College Adjustment in 1952, the Soochow University College of Arts and Sciences, together with the South Jiangsu College of Arts and Culture Education, and the Jiangnan University Department of Mathematics and Physics, merged into the South Jiangsu Normal College, renamed as Jiangsu Normal College the same year later.
In 1982, the university was approved by the State Council to be renamed as Soochow University. Eventually, the Suzhou College of Sericulture, the Suzhou Institute of Silk Technology, the Suzhou Medical College merged with Soochow University. Currently, Soochow University has developed into a comprehensive university with a considerable size, covering the disciplines of philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management science, and art.
It has a strong foundation and has achieved remarkable education results, enjoying a strong reputation at home and abroad. Suzhou University currently has 26 post-doctoral programs, 24 main discipline doctoral programs, 167 doctoral programs with emphasis, 1 professional doctoral degree, 47 main discipline master’s programs, 244 master’s programs with emphasis, 21 professional master’s programs, and 124 undergraduate programs. It has 4 national key disciplines, 7 Jiangsu dominant disciplines, 12 provincial level key main disciplines, and 22 provincial key disciplines with an emphasis. It has one national training base of liberal arts, a national training base of science research and teaching, two national experimental teaching demonstration centers, two state-level talent training model innovation zones, one national engineering laboratory, three national public service platforms, the National University Science Park, the State Breeding Base Key Laboratory, the Humanities and Social Sciences Research Base for the Ministry of Education, the Social Science Research Base of General Administration of Sports, 20 provincial key laboratories, seven provincial public service platforms, and four provincial engineering centers. At present, it has more than 50,000 students in total, including 14,317 graduate students, 25,312 undergraduates, and 1346 international students. It has total staff of 4,902, including five members of the Chinese Academy of Science and Engineering (one is a foreigner), 27 top-level scholars with overseas educational backgrounds, 4 Changjiang Scholars, 10 receiving the National Outstanding Youth Fund. Among all of our staff, 2,110 are associate professors or above. Our experts have become a strong teaching team that work well together.
