Academics





Soochow University’s education is mainly divided into four parts: undergraduate education, graduate education, overseas student education and professional training. It now has 26 post-doctoral,  24 main discipline doctoral programs, 167 doctoral programs with emphasis, 1 professional doctoral degree, 47 main discipline master’s programs, 244 master’s programs with emphasis, 21 professional master’s programs, and 124 undergraduate programs. It has 4 national key disciplines, 7 Jiangsu dominant disciplines, 12 provincial-level key main disciplines, and 22 provincial key disciplines with an emphasis. It now has in total more than 50,000 students, including 14,317 postgraduate students, 25,312 undergraduate students and 1,346 overseas students. Soochow University believes helping students grow is its most important duty. It explicitly states the philosophy of education as "academics, applying knowledge, and training model citizens". It strives to help students grow in many areas, emphasizes focused and individualized education, combines education with application, and opens new areas of thinking.


Soochow University has several important resources to help students achieve academic success, even in cooperation with organizations around the world. It has established the Sino-Singapore Joint Laboratory and the Institution of Functional Polymer Science with the National University of Singapore. It has also established the Nanotechnology Joint Research Institute and the Green Polymer Engineering and Catalysis Laboratory with the University of Waterloo in Canada. Also, it has cooperated with the French EDITFLOW Group to build the International Joint Laboratory of Measurement & Control Technology and other research institutions, effectively increasing the university’s ability and level of international joint research. Soochow University also tries to explore new ways of offering education abroad. It has cooperated with Portland State University to build the Confucius Institute at Portland State University, receiving more than 2,000 foreign students every year. Foreign students come to Soochow University to study medicine, international trade, business administration, computer, chemical industry, construction, sociology, gardening, English, Japanese, Chinese and other areas. In 2011, Laos Soochow University, founded in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. It is China's first university established abroad, and it paved the way for other Chinese universities to open universities outside of China.
