1st Bilateral Workshop on Nanotechnology Held between Soochow University and Trinity College Dublin



From January 7th to 9th, The1st Bilateral Workshop on Nanotechnology Between Soochow University and Trinity College Dublin was held at the College of Nano Science and Technology. During the meeting, both universities made communications and reports on its research progresses and achievements in thefield of nano technology, and a comprehensive discussions on issues such as bilateral scientific research cooperation and joint education projects.

On January 8th, 12 professors from both sides, including Professor Hongzhou Zhang and Igor Shvet (the Dean)from the Department of Physics of Trinity College Dublin, Professor John Boland and Wolfgang Schmitt from the department of chemistry, Professor Liu Zhuang and Sun Baoquan from the College of Nano Science and Technology, Soochow University, reported their research status and achievements on nano-materialsand devices separately. During the workshop, both sides made active exchangesand discussions on the frontier and application issues of related materials and devices. Besides, Professor Sun Xuhui also introduced the construction businesses for the laboratories of the College in detail while accompanying fellows from Trinity College Dublin for a visit to our labs.

On the morning of January 9th, in the meeting room of Area B, Building 909, the College of Nano Science and Technology, the delegation from Ireland met over 60 under- and post-graduate students of the College. Professor John Boland introduced the general status of the Centre for Research on Adaptive Nano structures and Nano devices briefly, and made an academic report themed “Big Surprises at Small Dimension – The Field of Nano Mechanics”. He also encouraged the students to focus on and participatedin the joint education project conduct by both sides.

On the very afternoon, the delegation also visited the Exhibition Center of Suzhou Industrial Park and held a symposium with relevant staffs in the management committee of SIP. Mr. Ding Jianguo, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office,Science & Technology Bureau of the Committee introduced the development model for talent introduction in SIP to the delegation and made a comprehensive explanation to the support policies of the government.

The bilateral workshop ended satisfactorily in a harmonious and friendly atmosphere. As an opportunity, it will promote the cooperation of both sides inscientific researches and education, and benefit the further improvements onrelated capabilities of both universities.
