Academician Sajeev John Engaged as a Chair Professor of Soochow University

On the morning of September 28th, an appointment ceremony was held at Room 101 of Physics Building to celebrate Professor Sajeev John's being engaged as a chair professor of Soochow University. Professor John is the father of photonic crystal, and an academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada.

Professor Sajeev John got his PhD degree in Harvard University in 1984. He proposed the localization of light in three-dimensional strongly scattering dielectrics in his doctoral dissertation and further explained the concept of photonic band gap materials in 1987. Given his great contributions in the field of photonic crystal, Professor John was awarded successively with over 10 international awards of sciences such as King Faisal International Prize in Science, Ontario's Platinum Medal for Science and Medicine and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Quantum Electronics Award. Besides, he was also selected as a Thomson-Reuters Citation Laureate in 2011.

On the appointment ceremony, Vice President Yuan Yinnan issued the letter of appointment to Professor Sajeev John and wore him the school badge. After the ceremony, professor John shared a wonderful academic report with teachers and students in the ceremony.

Focusing on the researches of photonic crystal and related fields, the wave functional materials team of the College of Physics, Optoelectronics and Energy is a dashing contingent of young researchers and scientists with a world-leading academic level. Constituted by 6 professors (one winner of Excellent Young Scientists Fund of National Natural Science Foundation, two members of the Recruitment Program for Young Professionals of the organizing Department of CCCPC, one member of Excellent Talents Program of the MOE, and two Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talents of Jiangsu Province), the very team has published many high-end research papers in some first-class periodicals such as Nature Material, Nature Communication, Nature Photonics and Physics Review Letters, and has been awarded with a second prize for Science and Technology Progress in Jiangsu Province. It is believed that Academician Sajeev John would bring the team with more supports and progresses to its further development and promotion in the future.
