What is HSK?
To make the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) better, the Office of Chinese Language Council International invited many experts in foreign-language teaching, linguistics, psychology, and education to survey the actual situation of Chinese teaching overseas. Based on the full survey and the absorption of the advantages of the original HSK, the Office of Chinese Language Council International has put forward the introduction of the new Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK).
1) Parts: The HSK is China's only standardized test of Standard Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers. The test mainly focuses on the Chinese communicative ability. The new HSK has two parts: written and oral and the two parts are independent of each other. Written test including HSK (Level1), HSK (Level 2), HSK (Level 3), HSK (Level 4), HSK (Level 5) and HSK (Level6); oral test includes HSK (Elementary), HSK (Intermediate) and HSK (Advanced).Oral test will involve recording speech.
2) Levels: compared with "Chinese Language Proficiency Standards" and"Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF)"
Chinese Language Proficiency Standards
HSK(Level 1): Designed for learners who can understand and use some simple Chinese characters and sentences to communicate, and prepares them for continuing their Chinese studies. In HSK 1 all characters are provided along with Pinyin.
HSK(Level 2): Designed for learners who can use Chinese in a simple and direct manner, applying it in a basic fashion to their daily lives. In HSK 2 all characters are provided along with Pinyin as well.
HSK(Level 3): Designed for learners who can use Chinese to serve the demands of their personal lives, studies and work, and are capable of completing most of the communicative tasks they experience during their Chinese tour.
HSK(Level 4): Designed for learners who can discuss a relatively wide range of topics in Chinese and are capable of communicating with Chinese speakers at ahigh standard.
HSK(Level 5): Designed for learners who can read Chinese newspapers and magazines,watch Chinese films and are capable of writing and delivering a lengthy speechin Chinese.
HSK(Level 6): Designed for learners who can easily understand any information communicated in Chinese and are capable of smoothly expressing themselves in written or oral form.
TheHSK tests the Chinese proficiency of adult Chinese learners. The test can:
a) Provide reference for college admissions, course classification, exemption from certain courses and giving proficiency credits.
b) Provide information for employment, training, promotion.
c) Provide information for Chinese learners to know well and improve their Chinese proficiency.
d) Provide reference for the relevant teaching or training institutions to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching or training.
How to Apply
1) Test registration and time:
The HSK is held at designated test centers in China and abroad. A list of test centers can be found on the HSK website. Test dates are published annually and written tests are more frequently held than spoken ones, generally around once a month, depending on the test center. Test registration is usually open for 30 days prior to the test date for the paper-based test or around 10 days prior the actual test date for the computer-based test.

After successfully registered, candidates can receive registration confirmation information approximately 15 days before the date of the exam and can print the voucher to take the test from the registration website or can receive it from the test center.
The admission voucher contains the candidate's name, nationality, gender, document type, number of test subjects, test time, name and sites of test center, exam tips, and other important information.
Candidates should check carefully whether their information is accurate. The name, gender, date of birth and ID number must be consistent with their other valid documents, or you may not be allowed to take the test.
If the information is incorrect on the ticket, do not make changes yourself. On the test day, only under the supervision of an examiner can you change the incorrect information. If you change any information without the supervision of the test examiner the exam results will be not valid.
Your admission voucher is the document with which you are allowed into the examination room. Candidates need to keep the voucher after the test. Your voucher needs to be shown to receive transcripts and certificates. Also, the voucher is used to obtain your results on-line, re-printing transcripts and other relevant services.
3) Standard photos for test:
Photographs used in examinations:
- Recent bareheaded with white background
- Both black and white or color photos will be accepted
- Face should be seen clearly
- Photo should show the head and the upper part of the shoulder
If digital photos are provided:
- Format: JPG / JPEG
- File Size: 100KB
4) Uploading digital photos
Log on to the registration website and follow the instructions to upload digital photos. The photo will appear on the admission ticket and the corresponding certificate. The candidates will no longer need to prepare printed photos if they upload their photo online.
If a printed photo is provided it should follow these guidelines:
- Quantity: 2
- Size: 40mm × 30mm (standard two-inch)
- Name, test center code and the candidate number should be written on the back of the photograph.
One photo must be printed and pasted the correct position to admission voucher, and another photo should be handed in to the examiner on the test day.
